Rock 'n Roll pioneer Dale Hawkins dead in Little Rock Dale Hawkins' "Oh! Suzy-Q" LP, 1957 (Chess Records) Dale Hawkins, best known for his 1957 hit "Suzie Q" (also known as "Suzy-Q"), has died in Little Rock, Arkansas at the age of 73, of complications from colon cancer. He had been undergoing treatment at the Arkansas Hospice Center at St. Vincent's Doctors Hospital in Little Rock. Born August 23, 1936 in Goldmine, Louisiana, Hawkins was a singer, guitarist, and songwriter called "the archictect of 'Swamp Rock Boogie.'" From his website: ""His swamp rock classic, 'Susie Q,' crackles with the manic energy of that restless time, and conjures instant images of steamy Southern nights. It features a 15-year-old James Burton on guitar, the first of many guitar wizards Dale would discover and nurture. Others included Scotty Moore, Joe Osborn, Roy Buchanan, Fred Carter, Jr., and Kenny Paulsen. "Dale's early experiments in production in the studios of Shreveport's KWKH with Merle Kilgore and Johnny Horton developed the skills that would later produce hits for the Uniques, Five Americans, Jon & Robin & the In Crowd, Michael Nesmith, Harry Nilsson, and others. Along the way, he even found time to host "The Big Big Beat" aka "The Dale Hawkins Show" on WCAU-TV in Philadelphia." "Suzie Q" was covered by among others, the Rolling Stones in 1964, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, who recorded an 11-minute quasi-psychedelic version on their first LP in 1968. Among Hawkins' other hits were "La Do Da Da," later recorded by the Blue Things. He has been inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and The Lousiana Music Hall of Fame. http://www.examiner.com/x-18802-Dallas-Celebrity-Headlines-Examiner~y2010m2d14-Rock-n-Roll-pioneer-Dale-Hawkins-dead-in-Little-Rock

Chanteur US né Delmar Allen Hawkins, le 22 août 1938 à Goldmine (Louisiane).

Musicians and more turn out to honor rockabilly great in ShreveportShreveport bid farewell Sunday to a rockabilly icon with Louisiana roots. More than 100 musicians, politicians and friends turned out to honor Dale Hawkins, best known for the oft-covered hit "Oh! Suzy-Q," at the Robinson Film Center. Hawkins died Feb. 13 in Little Rock, Ark., after a battle with colon cancer. Springhill native Joe Stampley was among speakers on the bill to honor Hawkins. Hawkins produced the song "Not Too Long Ago" in the mid-1960s for Stampley and his band, The Uniques. That kicked off what has become a more than four-decade career for Stampley, 66. "He's what gave us the lift for the record being put out," said Stampley, who lives in Nashville. The singer said he visited Hawkins shortly before his death and they sang "Not Too Long Ago" together for the last time. "He could barely just whisper," Stampley said. "He was a people person." East Texas guitarist Bugs Henderson, who played studio sessions with Hawkins, paid his respects Sunday. "He's probably — other than other guitar players — the most influential guy in my career," said Henderson, 66, of Jefferson, Texas. Among highlights of Henderson's gigs with Hawkins was being on the list of musicians who helped record an updated version of "Oh! Suzy-Q" in the 1980s. Hawkins wrote the song in the 1950s. Hawkins, a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, produced songs such as "Western Union" by the Five Americans and "Do It Again A Little Bit Slower" by Jon and Robin. Later in life, Hawkins was a social worker and counselor. Longtime local radio personality Larry Ryan, Tyler, Texas, engineer Robin Hood Brians and Shreveport-based singer/songwriter Maggie Lewis Warwick also paid tribute to Hawkins on Sunday. Brians and Warwick said God and family were most important to Hawkins. Born Delmar Allen Hawkins and hailing from Richland Parish's Goldmine community, Hawkins, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, recorded his first hit in the KWKH Radio studios in downtown Shreveport in 1956. Included in that session was then-15-year-old guitarist James Burton. Veva Grant, of Bossier City, checks out Dale Hawkins memorabilia before the start of a tribute in his honor at Robinson Film Center in downtown Shreveport on Sunday afternoon. The rockabilly icon recently died of cancer.Go to shreveporttimes.com to view a photo gallery. http://www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20100222/NEWS01/2220342/Musicians-and-more-turn-out-to-honor-rockabilly-great-in-Shreveport
