| Nov. 5, 2008 — Merle Haggard underwent surgery in Bakersfield on Monday to have a cancerous growth removed from his lung.
The operation, conducted at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, was a success, The Bakersfield Californian reported, and the singer was listed in stable condition. The surgery’s effect on his ability to perform in the near future was not disclosed. The lungs play an essential role in singing.
Doctors originally discovered the tumor in May. It was believed to be benign, though they were unable to identify the nature of the growth at that time. As recently as August, Merle had resisted urging by friends and associates to have further treatment. Merle said at the time he did not trust hospitals, an attitude likely fostered by previous surgery. In 2003, he was one of 366 former patients who sued a Redding, Calif., hospital for performing unnecessary heart operations.
Monday’s surgery ironically occurred the same day Country Radio Broadcasters announced Merle will receive a Career Achievement Award. That honor is slated for March 3 at the Country Music DJ and Radio Hall of Fame Dinner and Awards, an event that coincides with the Country Radio Seminar in Nashville. ==> http://www.gactv.com/gac/nw_headlines/article/0,3034,GAC_26063_5939054,00.html |
