Sometimes I’m really mesmerized about the recordings El Toro Records release! From complete forgotten artists over full recording sessions of great names, the people behind this record label surely deserves a lifetime achievement award for their excellent work. With the re-release of Pat Cupp and his Flying Saucers they just added one more extra reason to give out this award real soon.
Pat Cupp was raised with music, but it took him until college before he realised the full possibility of his gifts! After imitating Elvis to amuse his fellow students, Pat Cupp realised that he might have a chance as entertainer and performer and moved over with his band to Memphis and the magical sound of “Sun Records” Turned down by this record company Pat found a deal with RPM and started to record some thrilling and energetic Rockabilly tunes of which most of them stayed un-release for a long time. Somehow most of his recordings did found some output by the end of the sixties and while the man was a local hero he never got the attention he musically deserved. Until a new rockabilly revival hit the scene in the seventies. Many of these new rebels had picked up the obscure records from people like Pat Cupp and others and found a great source of inspiration in their music. After all these sounds where not only original, but stayed unspoiled for a long time and came with an authentic sound that wasn’t always to be found in recordings of the big names.
Tunes like “Long Gone Daddy”, “That Girl of Mine” or “I guess It’s meant that way” where (and still are) dance floor fillers for sure, but even the lesser known tracks shows that this man was on the right track musically spoken. Enjoy the authentic sound of Pat Cupp and his Flying Saucers and experience once more the active sound of the 5t’s in and around Memphis with this Long Gone Daddy
