By the time Mann got to Sun Records, as part of a group that included drummer W.S. Holland, most of Sun's reputation was already firmly in place. The tapes of Mona Lisa, Carl Mann's biggest hit record, sat unissued in the Sun studio where they might have remained if Conway Twitty had not flipped over them in early 1959 and produced a cover version at his next recording session. With Twitty's record of Mona Lisa starting to chart, Sun was forced to release their own original version by Carl. Mona Lisa became a Top 20 record in the summer of 1959, spending 16 weeks on the 'Billboard' charts. Carl Mann was far more than a 'one hit wonder.' This CD offers a detailed look at the surprisingly powerful body of work Mann recorded during a relatively brief period of time. Although unfairly cast into the role of 'rockin' up the standards, Mann had a lot more to say musically than uptempo versions of Nat Cole hits (Mona Lisa had been a # 1 hit by Cole in 1950). The best of Carl's work is on display on this fine disc. You'll hear all the highlights, from his earliest and most priwithive Jackson recordings (including that elusive Jaxon single) to his finest moment in the Sun studio on the Charlie Rich rocker, I'm Coming Home. Even Elvis knew how fine this recording was when he covered Carl's arrangement notefor-note for his next LP in 1960. One highlight of Carl's original recordings is the powerful instrumental work of guitarist Eddie Bush. Regarded by many as one of the finest guitarists to record for Sun (the competition includes Scotty Moore, Carl Perkins and Roland Janes), Bush's manic style is on dramatic display here. So is the energetic drumming of W.S. Holland, who also graced the best of Carl Perkins' recordings for Sun. In addition to Carl's musical legacy, an up-to-date biography by Sun Records historian Hank Davis accompanies this disc. Much of the text is based on exclusive recent interviews. All told, this CD is a worthy addition to Bear Family's widely acclaimed series of 'Rocks' CDs. You won't find a better, more comprehensive look at this too-easily overlooked Sun artist.
