| Various ArtistsSnatch And Grab It 33 2/3 Edition - LimitedCD catalog no.: BCD 17031 EAN: 4000127170316 Various ArtistsSnatch And Grab It 33 2/3 Edition - Limited Bear Family is not a 'greatest hits' label, and we're proud of it…even if our accountants aren't. Throughout our thirty three years, we've gone out of our way to reissue the finest music in the highest possible quality packages, regardless of commerce. Some of the music is admittedly a little obscure, and fans are understandably wary of buying something they don't know. Hence Bear Family's 33 1/3 promotion. To celebrate our 33rd birthday, we've assembled three 33-song CDs at a special price. Now its time for: BCD 17031 - Snatch And Grab It - 33 2/3 Edition - R&B Classics. All of these recordings are just from Bear Family's catalog of R&B related music. Some of these songs aren't very familiar; in fact, some of the artists aren't very familiar, but this is a jumpin' little record. For every well-known song, like the Platters: Goodnight Sweetheart, It's Time To Go, there's half-a-dozen gloriously obscure tracks, like For You My Love by Nellie Lutcher. This is a true alternative history of R&B. Thirty-three flashes from the archives of oblivion, courtesy of Bear Family! Bear Family is a different kind of record company. Sure, fans can buy CDs on out-of-copyright labels for next to nothing or download songs for a few cents, but that's not why they became fans. They want to know about the artists, see rare and unpublished photos, want the very best sound quality, and want to go beyond the greatest hits. Bear Family caters to the fan in all of us!CD content:

| HAWKINS, Screamin'JayScreamin' Jay RocksCD catalog no.: BCD 16687 AR EAN: 4000127166876
ready for shipping HAWKINS, Screamin'Jay Screamin' Jay Rocks
The godfather of gothic rock! - The star of Jim Jarmusch's 1989 cult movie 'Mystery Train'! - 31 classics, featuring the original hit version of I Put A Spell On You! - Comprehensive liner notes from ueber-fan Bill Millar! - Screamin' Jay Hawkins' records didn't go over-the-top; they started over-the-top and got more berserk from there. He lived as he sang. A simple question, like how he came up with the nickname 'Screamin'' elicited this response: "I went to Nitro, West Virginia. This is 1950. There was a big, big, huge fat lady at the bar. Just allow your mind to roam free when I say 'fat'…Glutton! Beast! O-bese! She made the average elephant look like a pencil, that's how fat she was. She was downing Black & White scotch and Jack Daniels at the same time, and whenever she looked up at me she shouted 'Scream, baby, scream!' I said to myself: 'You wanted a name?'" Screamin' Jay's influence can be found wherever music has sunk to new depths of depravity. Mixing voodoo rhythms and horror film props, he invented gothic rock, a genre that includes Alice Cooper, Arthur Brown, the antics of Black Sabbath's Ozzy Osbourne, the horror film make-up of Kiss, not to mention 'The Rocky Horror Show'. Hawkins also paved the way for George Clinton and Cameo whose lead singer, Larry Blackmon, emerged… like Jay… from a huge silver coffin. And, oh yes, he wrote and recorded the original version of I Put A Spell On You.CD content:

ready for shipping THOMAS, Rufus The Sun Years, plus
29 tracks including all known surviving recordings from 1949 - 1956. - 2 recently discovered sides from his first recording session for Star Talent. - all 8 original 78 rpm discs for Star Talent, Bullet, Chess, Sun, and Meteor. Some of these now for the first time ever from the first generation-tape. - 3 recordings from the Memphis Recording Service, not originally issued. - 2 original versions of songs Rufus covered (1 by Joe Hill Louis, 1 by Rosco Gordon; previously unissued). - The original version of Hound Dog by Big Mama Thornton. - 2 bonus recordings by Rufus's fellow DJ, Moohah Williams. - 2 extracts from Rufus on radio WDIA in the 1950s. - A rare radio interview with Daddy Cool. Mastered as only Bear Family can do it. A newly researched 68-page booklet by Martin Hawkins largely based on interviews by himself and Dave Booth, plus rare photos and adverts. Rufus Thomas was a one-off: a larger than life character who made as great a contribution to the performance and style of American music as he did to the recording of it. He saw it all from black vaudeville to rap... and played a major role in the evolution of African American music. His earlier R&B recordings have been unjustly obscured by his later role in the development of Stax Records and his string of soul hits. But Rufus was – though he always played it down – a damn fine blues and R&B singer in the 1950s. And this is one of the best cross-sections of African American music you'll hear from the period. Rufus sings with the Lionel Hampton band, several Memphis R&B dance bands, and with Sun studio session groups. And, in case we forget, he gave Sun Records its first hit, Bear Cat.CD content:

They backed everyone! LaVern Baker, Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner...! - An absolute must-have for doo-wop and vocal group collectors! - They recorded the original version of Bill Haley’s Burn That Candle and recorded the Hot 100 classic Why. - Of all the talented vocal groups populating the mid-1950s New York R&B scene, perhaps none were on as many recordings as the Cues – even if few outside the industry knew about it. The versatile vocal quintet provided background harmonies for Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker, Ivory Joe Hunter, and Big Joe Turner. Assembled by legendary Atlantic Records A&R man Jesse Stone in 1954, the Cues made a series of 1954-1956 singles under their own name for Lamp, Jubilee, Capitol, and Prep that constitute 'Why', Bear Family's exhaustive overview of the group's career. The Cues cut the classic Burn That Candle (Kirk wrote it under his nom de plume Winfield Scott), but as was so often the case their R&B original was covered by a pop group, Bill Haley & His Comets. They also cut Cracker Jack the same week that rockabilly wildman Joe Clay cut it for RCA Victor. All in all, these are some wild, rockin’ and hugely accomplished vocal group sides. Look at the titles, Killer Diller... Crazy, Crazy Party .... Scoochie Scoochie, etcetera. Now add the cream of the New York session musicians like Sam The Man Taylor.CD content:

The great bluesman's most commercial and sought-after recordings from 1958-1960! - Included are 3 previously unissued masters. - Blues, Rock'n'Roll, and R&B collectors will want this! - One of the most prolific bluesmen of the post-war era, Jimmy McCracklin became a rock'n'roll star during the late 1950s. After his Hot 100 hit The Walk in 1958, McCracklin signed with Mercury Records. That memorable chapter in the pianist's lengthy and prolific career is captured in fabulous detail on 'The Mercury Recordings,' containing every existing master from his 1958-1960 contract. Recording in New York with pioneering African American A&R man Clyde Otis, Jimmy waxed three blistering dance workouts at one session: his original Georgia Slop, The Wobble, and Let's Do It (The Chicken Scratch), and all three of them are here. His last Mercury date in September '60 was done in New Orleans, and McCracklin laid down one of the truly great versions of Folsom Prison Blues. He wasn't on Mercury for long, but his brief stint makes for exciting listening. Collectors have been looking for this ever since Bear Family’s original edition went out-of-print! Now it's back. He invented R&B saxophony! - He started with Duke Ellington and ended up leading the house bands on those fabulous rock'n'roll tours! - Jazz and R&B fans will want this. Tenor sax comes no better! - New York was loaded with blasting R&B tenor saxophonists during the 1950s. Their frantic wails helped define rock'n'roll during its formative years. In that scene, Big Al Sears was a titan among titans. Prior to his full-fledged leap into the R&B arena, Big Al played with the orchestras of Andy Kirk and Duke Ellington, later blowing his mighty horn loud and long on Johnny Hodges' 1951 instrumental hit Castle Rock. Big Al would eventually operate his own record labels and publishing company, but 'Sear-iously' deals with his swinging 1949-1956 sides as a bandleader for Coral, RCA Victor, Herald, and Groove, when scorching instrumentals were in vogue and the bespectacled saxist was in the vanguard of it all. Backed by a coterie of New York heavy hitters including saxman Budd Johnson, guitarist Mickey Baker, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Panama Francis, Sears rattles the rafters time and again with barn-burners such as Rock And Roll Ball, Here's The Beat, Great Googa Mooga, Right Now, Right Now, and the title track. Fellow New York R&B pioneer Jesse Stone turns up as guest vocalist under his Charles Calhoun sobriquet on Come And Dance With Me, and Big Al serves up LaVern Baker's then-current smash Tweedlee Dee as an infectious instrumental. This was the era when Sears was a featured member of Alan Freed's rock and roll orchestra, and it's obvious why the top-rated deejay revered him: Big Al's big tone could instantly ignite any audience. 35 tracks rockin' from the human jukebox. - Sleepy LaBeef rocks……yes, he really rocks on these 35 classic recordings. Not for Sleepy the mushy stuff that sometimes passes as rock'n'roll. We’re talking raw and authentic 1950s rockabilly here. And some 1960s and 1970s recordings that rock even harder, if possible, while retaining the uncompromising spirit that only a true original artist can. Sleepy LaBeef was there in the mid-1950s when rockabilly was born. He heard and saw it all, and he was a part of it. From his first records for Starday and Dixie in Texas, through small Houston labels and the major national label, Columbia, Sleepy still kept rocking. He carried on rocking on the reactivated Sun label in the 1970s. It was a marriage made in rock'n'roll heaven. On stage Sleepy LaBeef has long had the reputation as a human jukebox, a living, breathing, guitar-picking history of American music. After fifty years, he still dispenses pulsating rocking blues and country songs, one after the other in amazingly quick succession. This CD is as close as the listener can get to that kind of live experience. And, better still; you get the real original recordings in the best possible sound quality. Here are:CD content:
- 1. All The Time
- 2. I'm Through
- 3. Baby Let's Play House

The first set with the complete recordings of Barry DeVorzon (Barry & The Tamerlanes) as John Buck. - Includes the hit single Chi Chi. - Also includes 3 previously unissued titles. - Recorded, released and then forgotten… in America, Chi Chi became a hit single in Germany for John Buck & The Blazers. When the single was re-released on a new label in the States, it was by Kalasandro. And when the German label attempted to issue a follow-up, John Buck was no longer contractually available, so the Germans issued a single by local orchestra leader Horst Wende (as John Buck and The Chi Chi's). While several more songs were recorded – originals, adaptations of old songs, and covers of international hits – the success of Chi Chi was never duplicated, and John Buck became a pop footnote. It’s an interesting story and one that Bear Family reveals in this set. John Buck was really American composer, singer, music publisher, and label owner Barry DeVorzon. He covered a lot of musical territory from Duane Eddy to the Tiuana Brass, and recorded with the best of Hollywood's studio musicians. He also recorded as Barry & The Tamerlanes. Now, Bear Family gathers everything that DeVorzon recorded as John Buck, plus the bogus German single and two previously unreleased songs. And Barry DeVorzon himself reveals the whole story!CD content:

A 30-track follow-up to Bear Family's successful 'Rockin' And Boppin' In The Desert - Arizona Rockabilly Vol. 1 (BCD 16230). - Ultra hard-to-find rockabilly and rock'n'roll, 1955-1965! Including Waylon Jennings singing Rave On ! - An absolute MUST-HAVE for hardcore rock'n'roll collectors! - In 1999, Bear Family released a compilation of obscure rockers from the great southwest titled 'Rockin' And Boppin' In the Desert - Arizona Rockabilly Vol. 1. Due to the popularity of that album, Bear Family returned to the dusty boxes and shelves for this second volume. And it's even better than the first! The compilation includes ultra-obscure singles, many coining big bucks when and if they turn up for sale, plus six hot unreleased tunes. A few of these desert discs actually saw light on national labels but most are from obscure small Arizona label imprints. Altogether, there are 30 more jumping and thumping tracks of Arizona musical history from 1955-1965. Several performers from Vol. 1 return for an encore here including Jimmy Dell, Gene Maltais, Jimmy Johnson, Lonesome Long John Roller, Rusty Isabell, and guitar greats Al Casey and Don Cole of course. Also featured are early tracks by Skip & Flip as The Pledges, writer/producer George Richey, western favorite Rex Allen and teen throb Curtis Lee. Buddy Holly fans will appreciate the previously unreleased track by one of the Crickets, Niki Sullivan, and a great rockin' version of Rave On by Waylon Jennings, both with that special Holly sound. The most influential country singer of all time! Lefty Frizzell influenced Merle Haggard, George Jones, and countless others. - A completely different slant on Lefty! All his finest uptempo recordings in one generously full package! - Includes all-time country classics like If You’ve Got The Money I’ve Got The Time, Always Late With Your Kisses, and Give Me More Of Your Kisses, as well as rockabilly standards like You’re Humbuggin’ Me. - Bear Family Records was the first company to do right by Lefty Frizzell. Our 14-LP set, 'His Life, His Music,' was issued back in 1984 when Lefty's reputation was known only to a few. He'd died in obscurity nine years earlier at the tragically early age of 47. The LP box together with the hugely improved 12-CD version, 'Life’s Like Poetry,' issued in 1992 really set the stage for the Lefty Frizzell revival. Now he's almost always mentioned in the same breath as Hank Williams. He was honky tonk music personified, but he could rock hard when he wanted. This set includes all of his finest uptempo songs, including the fabulous You're Humbuggin' Me. It also includes one song, Steppin' Out, that we couldn't include on the box for legal reasons. Now it's here along with 32 other Lefty Frizzell uptempo classics. Bear Family’s 'Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight' series is establishing a reputation comparable to our definite rockabilly packages in the 'That’ll Flat Git It' series. Definitive, perfectly compiled, exhaustively annotated, and fabulously illustrated. Plus Bear Family's trademark rich and beautifully engineered sound.CD content:

ready for shipping SKINNER, Jimmie One Dead Man Ago - Gonna Shake This Shack
The first single-disc anthology showcasing this great down-home stylist from country music's golden age! - Packed with uptempo '50s honky-tonk classics from Capitol, Decca and Mercury master tapes, plus vintage rarities from Radio Artists. - Includes Skinner's biggest chart hit I Found My Girl In The U.S.A. plus such enduring originals like Don't Give Your Heart To A Rambler and You Don't Know My Mind. - Award-winning music historian Dave Samuelson profiles Skinner's fascinating career. - Once one of country music's most beloved, best-known figures, Jimmie Skinner drew the map that today's 'alt-country' singersongwriters follow. Inspired by the bluesmen of his youth, Skinner wrote songs of melancholy, despair and anger, framing them with catchy, unforgettable melodies. The consummate country music outsider, Skinner stripped country music to its raw essentials, much as Sun Records did with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and especially Johnny Cash and His Tennessee Two. If Skinner's phrasing was reminiscent of Jimmie Rodgers and early Ernest Tubb, his voice was unmistakably his own – a warm, baritone growl that boomed out of the era's jukeboxes. He thrashed his guitar with an aggressive backbeat that inspired a budding generation of rockabilly singers. Electric mandolinist Ray Lunsford accompanied him with simple, funky melody lines that became a hallmark of the Skinner style. When the major labels finally beckoned, Skinner battled to maintain his artistic integrity. His persistence paid off in the late '50s with country chart hits that defied the emerging Nashville Sound. Rather than bow to changing tastes in country music, Skinner voluntarily ended his recording career. This 33-track collection features many of Skinner's classic 1949-1960 recordings for Radio Artists, Capitol, Decca and Mercury, along with a rare demo and an audio excerpt from an unfinished autobiography. Dave Samuelson provides a biographical sketch of this fascinating, eccentric performer.CD content:

One of the all-time Country Music Hall of Fame greats finally gets the Bear Family treatment! - The birth of the legendary Bakersfield Sound! - Includes Buck's COMPLETE recordings 1953-1964. Demos, singles, LPs, unreleased songs! All his history-making hits (Under Your Spell Again, Above And Beyond, Act Naturally, Love’s Gonna Live Here…and many, many more) plus the rarities that only Bear Family uncovers! - Includes ultra-rare sessions featuring Buck as a session musician in 1953-54! - Two unreleased performances and 12 alternate takes! - Guitar fans will want to hear legendary Don Rich evolve into one of the greatest Telecaster twangmeisters of all time! Includes Don's solo items recorded for Buck's albums. - Hear Buck and the band in session with legendary producer Ken Nelson! - Before he died in 2006, Buck Owens had wanted Bear Family to chronicle his career as only we can. Now it has happened! This collection brings forth the Big Bang of Bakersfield country music. This is how it happened, record by record, session by session! Bakersfield had a fertile country scene B.B. (before Buck), but he put it on the map with an epochal string of Top Ten and #1 singles from 1959-1988, paving the way for fellow Bakersfielders Merle Haggard, Bonnie Owens and Red Simpson. While Nashville slicked up its music to snare pop fans in the 60s, Buck's bare-bones honky tonk kept it real and twangin'. Gram Parsons, the Beatles, the Desert Rose Band, John Fogerty, Emmylou Harris, Dwight Yoakam, Keith Whitley, the Derailers, Trace Adkins, Garth Brooks and Brad Paisley all drank deeply from Buck's rhinestoned chalice. Among the first country singers profiled in 'Rolling Stone' (1969), he became a household name during his 17 years cohosting TV's 'Hee-Haw' but to him, his legacy was always the music—this music!Bear Family Box content:
