GUIDO D’AMICO – THE ITALIAN COWBOY HAS GONE
THAT BIG OLD MOON -
Billy BurkeGuido D’ Amico who had cut the great “Jimmy Boy” for Quality (1823) in 1958 just passed away on May 1, 2008 in Canada at 90 years old.
Originaly from Ortona area, Chiety, Italy, George and Felicia d’ Amico settled in Fernie, Bristish Columbia. There was born Guido on, February 12, 1918 but he was raised, one of five childrens, in Nordegg, Alberta. Growing up he went to work in the coal mine and developed a passion for music. Here he married Frances Black in 1942 and, in 1952, was fronting a band named “The Saddle Pals” that included Hank Noble or The Stoltz Brothers. In 1953, after having his own daily program on CKRD in Red Deer, Alberta, he secured a recording contract with “Aragon” records in Vancouver, British Columbia. Know as “The Italian Cowboy”, he got three singles and an LP for that label. He settled, with his wife and childrens, in Calgary in 1954 and went to work for Coca-Cola company. Here he was a regular performer on the “Red Head Jamboree” broadcast by CFCN radio on Calgary.
His best record is “Jimmy Boy” b/w “I’m In Love With You”, recorded in Radio Station CFAC, in Calgary, was cut in 1958. That’s probably one of the best rockin’ song ever cut way up North with the fine guitar licks of Slim Johnson and the clicking 88 keys of Ray Griff. That record fit in the same high quality basket than Bob & Lucille “Eeny Meeny Miney Moe “ (Dotto 121), Ted d’ Aigle’s “Mary Lou” (Rodeo 219), Billy Guitar’s “Here’s Come The Night” or Buddy Burke’s “That Big Old Moon” (Regency 686).
In 1959, he toured with Hank Snow. In 1964, he moved his family to Central Alberta, in Eckville, where he purchased a hotel. He keeps recording country for “Big Wheel” and he got an LP out in 1980. But, he will never record the Jimmie Rodgers LP he dreamed for!
