| March 5, 1963 In memoriam - forty-five years ago country music stars died in plane crashWhen popular Kansas City country DJ Cactus Jack McCall was killed in an auto accident, his family was destitute. To help raise funds, many of Music City's top entertainers offered their services for a gala benefit on Sunday, March 3, 1963. The headliner was Patsy Cline, then riding high in both the country and pop charts. Joining her on the bill were Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, George Jones and Billy Walker. Cline, Copas and Walker planned to return to Nashville the following day in a Piper Comanche piloted by Randy Hughes, Cline's manager/guitarist and Copas's son-in-law. But early Monday morning Walker learned his father suffered a heart attack and was not expected to live. With the Kansas City airport fogged in, only commercial flights were allowed to arrive and depart. Knowing that Hawkins booked a reservation to Nashville on an outbound flight, Walker approached the lanky singer about using his ticket. Hawkins agreed, even though he was reluctant to fly with the relatively inexperienced Hughes.
Tuesday morning the weather was no better, but Cline, Copas, Hawkins and Hughes were anxious to return to Nashville. After getting clearance to take off that afternoon, the plane briefly stopped in Little Rock then headed to Dyersburg, Tennessee, to refuel. The Comanche took off at 6:07 p.m. for the final leg of the trip, which normally would take no longer than fifty minutes. The weather was turbulent, and thunderstorms pelted the area. By 7 p.m. the plane was still eighty-five miles outside of Nashville. As it approached Camden, Tennessee, a farmer noticed the small plane overhead, revving its motor in an apparent attempt to climb. Shortly after it left his sight, he heard it strike nearby treetops and then silence. The next morning the wreckage was found scattered across in a rugged area three miles west of town. There were no survivors. While en route to a March 7 prayer service for Cline, Jack Anglin, the tenor-singing half of Johnnie and Jack, was killed in a car accident. Forty-five years later, the country music community still grieves over this enormous loss. If Cline's star still shines brightly, Copas and Hawkins' names have largely faded from public memory. The majority of their early King records have been out of print for decades, and most LP and CD reissues suffered from excessive reverb or superfluous overdubs. They deserve better.
Bear Family Records remembers these legendary singers with three new releases in its critically acclaimed 'Gonna Shake This Shack' series. PATSY CLINEStop, Look And Listen - Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight CD with 44-page booklet BCD 16781 AH EAN: 4000127167811 ISBN: 978-3-89916-383-4 Country / Rockabilly Tracks: 31 Playing Time: 71:58 EUR 15,74 Though her reputation rests on seductive, easy-listening ballads, Patsy Cline frequently cut catchy uptempo tracks during the first five years of her brief recording career. This release culls the best of them, including her 1957 country hit Walking After Midnight, rockers like Stop, Look And Listen and bouncy numbers like Honky Tonk Merry-Go-Round. For years these sides have been released scattershot across countless CD anthologies padded with filler. Now they're collected onto one compact disc, all songs digitally remastered from the original session tapes. The set also includes previously unissued recordings.

His action-packed tent show was a top attraction across the American Southeast, and millions watched him on ABC-TV's Ozark Jubilee or listened to him over WSM's Grand Ole Opry. This single-disc collection skims the cream of Hawkins' King and RCA Victor recordings, focusing on blues, country boogies, and uptempo honky-tonk songs. This new anthology coincides with Bear Family's reissue of 'Hawk' (BCD 15539 CH), a 3-CD box set featuring Hawkins' complete 1954-1961 recordings for RCA Victor and Columbia.

- A ten-year retrospective of one of the unsung Sun Records heroes!
- Previously unissued Sun recordings!
- He was there at the beginning... watching Elvis in Mississippi in 1955... and he's still wowing crowds at revival shows!
Hayden Thompson is one of the last of the surviving original rock'n'rollers, and he's still a mighty impressive performer on the rockabilly revival circuit. He might not have had any hits, but he had credentials and style to spare. He was there at the epicentre of rockabilly back when nobody knew quite what it was or what to call it. He was born within a few miles of Elvis Presley, he saw Elvis at the dawn of his career, he made his first record within a few months of Elvis, and he was on the legendary Sun Records. His 1956 recording of Love My Baby is acknowledged as classic rockabilly. It comes no finer. This collection covers Hayden Thompson's first decade of recording: Here are both sides of all five singles issued between 1954 and 1962... all of them fabulously rare, along with most of the songs unissued at the time, plus eight previously unissued versions of the much-admired and much-emulated classic rockabilly sides Hayden cut at Sun in 1956 and '57 CD: 1. Love My Baby 2. Rock-A-Billy Gal 3. Fairlane Rock 4. One Broken Heart 5. Blues Blues Blues 6. Oh Mama (Mama Mama Mama) 7. You Are My Sunshine 8. Don't You Worry 9. Congratulations To You, Joe 10. - Includes rare alternate takes

- Exclusive photos, discography, and notes including interviews with several of Bobby's early friends and collaborators
Splish Splash wasn't the beginning for Bobby Darin, nor was it just a flirtation with rock 'n' roll. Raised in a Manhattan tenement, Walden Robert Cassotto found a way to escape – through his music. Forming a band in high school, he first played pop hits of the early '50s and standards; then he moved to calypso and folk before becoming one of rock 'n' roll's pioneers, cutting records reminiscent of Elvis Presley, Fats Domino and Little Richard, and writing what became one of Buddy Holly's biggest hits – Early In The Morning. This collection draws from sessions originally released on Decca, Atco, Brunswick and Capitol; and recorded in New York, Nashville and Los Angeles. In addition to hits like Splish Splash, Dream Lover and Early In The Morning, the album includes She's Tanfastic, originally issued as a tanningcream promotion, and Clementine, a swinging big-band precursor to Sinatra's Old MacDonald. If Mack The Knife is the beginning and end of Bobby Darin to you, you're in for a big surprise. CD: 1. Bullmoose (original 45 version) 2. Splish Splash 3. Mighty Mighty Man 4. Judy, Don't Be Moody 5. | PORTER WAGONER: The Cold Hard Facts Of Life PORTER WAGONER The Cold Hard Facts Of Life 3-CD digipac with 60-page booklet BCD 16537 CH Label: Bear Family Records EAN: 4000127165374 ISBN: 978-3-89916-381-0 Tracks: 70 Playing time: 176:57 Genre: Country EUR 49,90
- First CD release of six best-selling concept albums that gave the late country music superstar Porter Wagoner a cult following: 'Confessions Of A Broken Man' (1966); 'Soul Of A Convict' (1967); 'The Cold Hard Facts Of Life' (1967); 'The Bottom Of A Bottle' (1968); 'The Carroll County Accident' (1969); and 'Down In The Alley – Skid Row Joe' (1970).
- Seventy gripping 'slice of life' songs and recitations including such memorable Top 5 'Billboard' country chart hits as Green, Green Grass Of Home; Skid Row Joe; The Cold Hard Facts Of Life; and The Carroll County Accident.
- Features a rogue's gallery of murderers, philanderers, depressives, death-row inmates, unrepentant barflies, panhandling winos and other losers.
- Includes extensive notes covering these fascinating albums and Wagoner's life and career.
Invigorated by a critically acclaimed new album, invitations to open at major venues for Neko Case and The White Stripes, and a guest appearance on CBS-TV's 'The Late Show with David Letterman,' country music icon Porter Wagoner was riding on a late-career resurgence when he died October 26, 2007 after a brief illness.
Mainstream audiences best knew the lanky, rhinestone-suited singer as a symbol of 'old Nashville' and a longtime member of The Grand Ole Opry. Longtime country music fans remembered Wagoner as the popular television personality who gave Dolly Parton her big break. But a younger audience embraced him for the dark, nightmarish concept albums he made for RCA Victor during the late sixties. 'Confessions Of A Broken Man,' 'The Bottom Of The Bottle' and 'Down In The Alley' introduced Wagoner's alter ego, 'Skid Row Joe.' Once a successful family man, Joe was a disheveled, panhandling alcoholic. 'Soul Of A Convict' revealed the world of prison inmates and their long-suffering families. 'The Cold Hard Facts Of Life' explored the minds and motivations of murderers, philanderers and the down-and-out. 'The Carroll County Accident' was built around Wagoner's country and pop chart hit about two respected citizens, a fatal wreck and a missing wedding ring.
With songs penned by such writers as Bill Anderson, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Mel Tillis, Wagoner's mind-numbing country noir sagas are filled with as much despair as any low-budget grindhouse movie or cheesy paperback novel. Since their original release, these albums gained a cult following among the psychotronic set, alt-country fans and the Goth subculture. After being out of print for more than two decades, they're available once again in glorious stereo from the original two-track mixdown tapes. CD 1:

- The recent death of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun has focused attention on his incredible
achievement in making Atlantic the greatest independent label ever.
- Atlantic's Fifties rockabilly/rock'n'roll recordings have never been properly documented until now!
- Includes the original versions of Judy (popularized by Elvis) and Rave On (later popularized by Buddy Holly), as well as incredibly rare early recordings by David Gates, founder of the 1970s soft rock band, Bread. Plus Bill Haley's Comets.
- Bear Family's 'That'll Flat Git It' has been running for 15 years, and is getting better and better!
» topAtlantic Records is one of the great labels in American popular music. From classic R&B singers like Joe Turner, LaVern Baker, and The Drifters to soul stars like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Solomon Burke, and classic rock artists like the Rolling Stones, Yes, Led Zeppelin, and many others, Atlantic has been at the forefront of popular music since its inception in 1948. As an early sixtieth birthday present, we're reissuing 29 recordings that Atlantic probably forgot they ever made! It's the one side of the label's long story that has never been told: the attempt to score rock hits during the late 1950s that started with a failed attempt to sign Elvis. This collection includes the fabulous original version of a song that Elvis later covered, Judy, as well as the original version of a song that Buddy Holly later recorded, Rave On. Additionally, it features incredibly rare early recordings by David Gates, founder of the 1970s soft rock band, Bread, as well as Bill Haley's Comets, recording as the Kingsmen. Then, as always with 'That'll Flat Git It,' there are the great unknowns, many of whom have their story told here for the first time along with their music being reissued for the first time. Many series run out of steam after just a few volumes, but 'That'll Flat Git It' just keeps getting better and better. We began it in 1992, we now have 25 volumes, and more are in preparation! CD 1. - The first Phil Phillips LP or CD!
- Sea Of Love is one of all-time rock'n'roll classics. It has been revived by Robert Plant, titled a movie starring Al Pacino, and Cat Power's version is featured in the new Oscar-nominated movie 'Juno.'
- The remainder of Phil Phillips' catalog is incredibly strong.
- Nine songs are released here for the first time ever!
Sea Of Love. Half a century after Louisiana Swamp Pop singer Phil Phillips wrote that haunting, pleading song to woo a girlfriend, Sea Of Love still lingers in the collective consciousness of millions. Recorded in a tiny studio in Lake Charles, Phil's primitive-but-PERFECT version of the song, featuring members of Cookie and the Cupcakes, hit #1 in the R&B charts in the fall of 1959 and #2 in the pop charts, kept from surfacing to #1 only by the mega-hit Mack The Knife. It has since taken on a larger-than-life MYTHOLOGY, recorded for a Top 40 hit by Del Shannon in 1982 and by the Honeydrippers (featuring Robert Plant and Jimmy Page) for a #3 pop hit in 1984. In 1989 Sea Of Love titled a major Hollywood movie starring Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin featuring both Phillips' original and a cover by Tom Waits.
Recorded by scores of other artists as diverse as B. J. Thomas, Freddy Fender, the Heptones, Cat Power, and Iggy Pop, Phil Phillips' original Sea Of Love is still far and away the CLASSIC. The reason why is the VOICE of Phil Phillips, which is still strong today. Though the original version was anthologized hundreds of times, in the 49 years between Phil's number one hit and as of today There Has Never Been A Legitimate Phil Phillips Album! After half a century, fans of that AMAZING quavering, dreamlike tenor voice will finally hear all of the LOST TREASURES of Phil's early career, including such well-known-but-un-reissued masterpieces as Verdie Mae, Juella, and Phil's wondrous version of Stormy Weather.
In addition, the 26-track CD of all of his original Khoury/Mercury recordings features NINE TOTALLYUNISSUED TRACKS, including Phil's darkly powerful interpretation of Unchained Melody ! Obviously, this CD, remarkably coinciding with Phillips' induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. This HISTORIC CD is a MUST HAVE for all fans of classic R&B, Swamp Pop, Rock 'n' Roll, and just soul-inspiring, TIMELESS, balladry. CD

| VARIOUS ARTISTS: Let Me Be Your Sidetrack - The Influence of Jimmie Rodgers VARIOUS ARTISTS Let Me Be Your Sidetrack - The Influence of Jimmie Rodgers 6-CD mini box with 188-page booklet BCD 16863 FH Label: Bear Family Records EAN: 4000127168634 ISBN: 978-3-89916-376-6 Tracks: 159 Playing time: approx: 475 min. Genre: Country / Oldtime EUR 94,41 There is no shortage of legendary figures in country music. Arguably, none has been more influential than Jimmie Rodgers. In a career that spanned less than six years (1927-1933), Rodgers recorded 110 songs. 108 of those were subsequently recorded by other artists, a tradition that began in the late 1920s and continues to this day. That is a 'cover ratio' unmatched by any of country music's historic figures, including Hank Williams. Rodgers' influence extended far beyond songwriting. The Singing Brakeman also provided a blues-infused approach to performance that became a stylistic template for the careers of countless country singers. Rodgers' recordings remind us that hybrid music began well before Elvis Presley and Sun Records.
On the 75th anniversary of Jimmie Rodgers' death, Bear Family Records documents the extent of his influence by gathering together a remarkable collection of cover recordings by artists ranging from country icons like Gene Autry, Jimmie Davis, Hank Snow, Lefty Frizzell, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Bill Monroe, Merle Haggard and Ernest Tubb to pop and rock legends like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Rick Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jerry Garcia. Comprising a total of 159 tracks on six CDs, this unprecedented collection begins to do justice to Jimmie Rodgers' staggering legacy. The mini-box also offers Bear Family's usual lavish production values and attention to detail, including rare vintage photographs and detailed notes by music historians Carey Ginell, Tony Russell, and Dave Samuelson.
A companion piece to Bear Family's six-disc collection of Jimmie Rodgers' own recordings (BCD 15540), this is the ultimate and richly deserved tribute to Rodgers' influence within and beyond country music.
