Il sera alors intronisé au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

ROY ORBISON--TRAGEDY AND TRIUMPH
23 avril 1936 - 6 décembre 1988
The story of Roy Orbison is one of the strangest and most tragic in all of rock. His wide-ranging tenor voice and haunting ballads of lost love touched millions in the sixties and earned him the enduring respect of some of the greatest stars of rock, including the Beatles and Bruce Springsteen.
But fame is often accompanied by grief, and in Roy Orbison’s case, it was the horrifying accidental deaths in his family that haunted his soul. Yet, he persevered, and after remaining in the shadows of rock’s greatest stars for over twenty years, he suddenly found himself in demand again in the late eighties.
The revival of his career was short-lived. Just as he had seemingly buried his pain in the past, Roy Orbison, perhaps the greatest vocalist America has ever produced, was taken from us at the age of 52.
Roy Kelton Orbison was born on April 23, 1936 in Vernon, but grew up in the small West Texas oil town of Wink. By age six he was learning to play guitar from his father and soon showed a precocious talent, performing on the radio and for school friends. While still in high school, he formed the Wink Westerners, but didn't get serious about music until he left for North Texas State College. He met fellow student Pat Boone and backed him on guitar in an early recording. Boone's quick success with rhythm and blues covers in 1955 was an object lesson.
Orbison left college after two years, transformed the Wink Westerners into the Teen Kings, and began to tour West Texas.
On the strength of a recording of "Ooby Dooby" done at Norman Petty's studio, Orbison and the Teen Kings received a contract from Sun Records. There, his only success was a rerecording of "Ooby Dooby," which was a hit in 1956.
Deciding to concentrate on his writing talents, Orbison dissolved the Teen Kings and started composing songs, among them "Claudette," a love song to his wife that the Everly Brothers made into a 1958 hit, allowing Orbison to buy out his Sun contract.
In 1959, Monument Records offered a recording contract, and by 1960, the company's international hits began to flow, nearly all written by Roy Orbison. Between 1960 and 1964, Orbison produced the classics "Only the Lonely," "Blue Angel," "Running Scared," "Blue Bayou," and "It's Over."
In addition, Orbison won influential friends. While touring England in 1963, he met an up and coming British band called the Beatles, who were great admirers of his work
Roy with the Beatles and Gerry & The Pacemakers
George Harrison, was especially impressed with Orbison’s style. Twenty five years later, the two would create something special together, but for now, Orbison was the star and the Beatles knew it, although his shy demeanor never allowed his ego to spotlight himself.
Ironically, it was the Beatles’ success in 1964 that prompted the biggest hit of Roy’s career. The year of the British Invasion caught most American rock acts by surprise, and many careers began to dwindle under the sheer weight of English bands such as the Rolling Stones, the Dave Clark Five, the Kinks, the Animals and many more. Some American bands tried to change their image to adapt—Roy didn’t. Instead, he, along with writing partner Bill Dees, came up with one of rock’s most enduring songs in the strangest of ways.
Orbison and Dees were sitting in Roy’s home, trying to come up with a song when Roy’s wife Claudette walked into the room to announce she was going shopping and needed money. Dees casually commented that "a pretty woman doesn’t need any money.” Using the “pretty woman” line as the title, Orbison and Dees cranked out the lyrics to what would become one of the most famous songs of the sixties—”Oh Pretty Woman.”
The song hit #1 in September 1964, and by all accounts, Roy Orbison should have been well-entrenched to ride out the onslaught of British acts, but the decision was made to have him star in The Fastest Guitar Alive, a mediocre country-western musical. The film bombed, and although Orbison went on to record five more Top 40 songs in 1965, his days at the top were over. That was the least of his problems.
Heartbreak, a common theme in Orbison's music, began to shadow his personal life as well. In 1966, he was riding motorcycles with Claudette when a truck driver pulled out in front of her. She died an hour later
In 1968, Roy was on tour in England when he learned of a second tragedy. Two of their three sons had died in a fire at their Nashville home.
Although his faith had surely been tested, Orbison never faltered in his belief or his resolve. When asked how he could still to cling to a belief in God after the tragedies he had suffered, Roy never considered the alternative. “I don't have a pure statement but I believe in Jesus Christ and try to live by the rules of morality and conduct and a certain faithfulness in all things. That helps a great deal--so does common sense. It's very important to me. Your mind is created by a higher power and common sense will often tell you what to do.”
Although Orbison remarried in 1969 and continued to tour in the seventies, the hit records remained a thing of the past. Tragedy would strike again in 1973 when Orbison's older brother, Grady Lee Orbison, died in a motor vehicle accident on his way to visit Roy for Thanksgiving. Health problems complicated the end of the decade, so much so that in 1979, Roy needed heart surgery.
Although Roy had faded from star status, his music was still the key to his eventual return to prominence. In 1977, Linda Ronstadt reached #3 on the charts with her cover version of ”Blue Bayou,” but Orbison’s return to the public eye came about through unexpected circumstances. In 1986, David Lynch's film, Blue Velvet, prominently featured "In Dreams" on its soundtrack. The popularity of the film brought about calls for more of Roy’s music. In addition, his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 put him back on the rock & roll map. Suddenly, he was in demand again.
Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night, was filmed on September 30, 1987. Filmed in black and white, the special introduced Orbison to a whole new generation of fans. Put together by musical director, T-Bone Burnett, Orbison was accompanied by a who's who supporting cast.
The star-studded lineup is all the more noteworthy for the restraint with which they collaborated. All were fans, and all were volunteers who had lobbied to participate, resulting in a cohesive honoring of a great star through stirring performances. On piano was Glen D. Hardin, who had played piano for Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley. Lead guitarist James Burton was also from Presley's group. Other band members included Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and Steven Soles. Orbison had a stellar group of background vocalists too--k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes and Bonnie Raitt.
Jeff Lynne, a longtime fan and leader of the Electric Light Orchestra, signed on to produce a new album. During the recording process, George Harrison invited Roy to sit in on one of his recording sessions when he was cutting a B-side for a single. The resulting ”Handle With Care” brought about the Traveling Wilburys, a supergroup featuring Harrison, Lynne, Orbison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. Released in October 1988, under various pseudonyms as half-brothers (Roy was Lefty), supposed sons of Charles Truscott Wilbury, Sr., ”The Traveling Wilburys, Vol 1” was immediately dubbed as one of the top 100 albums of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
Some might find it hard to believe that Roy had a sense of humor. He rarely showed it, but playing up the "brothers" aspect of the Wilburys, he said, "Some said daddy was a cad and a bounder but I remember him as a Baptist Minister." And Tom Petty recalls the a moment when Roy, always one to minimize his singing talent, caught him off guard with his humor. "The night Roy agreed to join the Wilburys, we watched him give an incredible concert and kept nudging each other and saying, 'Isn't he great? He's in our band.' So, I said, 'Roy, you're so great. You're probably the greatest singer in the world,' and he said, '...probably.'"
But Petty has serious memories of working with Roy. ""All I can really say about him is, you know, we loved him. We told him, fortunately, at any given opportunity, you know any time we had, we always told him we loved him. We always hugged him."
Life was full of promise. The success of the Wilburys album left fans clamoring for more and a second album was planned. And Roy’s solo album was just about ready for release.
And then suddenly, Roy Orbison was gone.
On December 6, 1988, Orbison suffered a massive heart attack and died while visiting at his mother's home in Hendersonville a suburb of Nashville. He was only 52. His solo album was released in 1989. ”Mystery Girl”” featured ”You Got It” which would reach the Top 10 in February of that year. The Traveling Wilburys went on to release ”Volume 3”, skipping over Volume 2 as a tribute to Roy. And in an act of sentiment not often found in rock, the band’s video for ”End Of The Line” featured a rocking chair, gently rocking to the rhythm of the song, and holding only Roy’s guitar.
There were other tributes too.
Paul McCartney said, “Roy Orbison was and always will be one of the greats of rock & roll."
Tom Waits added, ”Roy’s songs were not so much about dreams as like dreams."
Songwriter Bernie Taupin, the lyricist for Elton John said, ”Roy Orbison was far ahead of the times, creating lyrics and music in a manner that broke with all traditions.
Bob Dylan on Roy: “There wasn't anything else on the radio like him. I'd listen and wait for another song, but next to Roy the playlist was strictly dullsville... gutless and flabby.”
k.d. lang said, “In 1987, Roy and I recorded a version of “Crying.” I walked into the studio, and it was like staring at the huge image of the Marlboro Man on Sunset Boulevard—so immediately ominous and present. We were rehearsing the song in the studio with the band, and Roy and I happened to be sharing a mike. When we got to a part where we were singing at the same time, we both leaned into the mike and our cheeks touched. His cheek was so soft, and the energy was so amazing. Not sexual but totally explosive, like the chemistry of some sort of kinship. I'll never forget what that felt like. And I will never ever forget that voice singing in my ear that day.”
Tom Petty said, "So much has been said about Roy, I just feel real lucky to have had the opportunity to know him and to work with him. He was the greatest singer that I ever heard, ever."
But Bruce Springsteen said it best. "Roy Orbison's voice was unearthly. He had the ability, like all great rock and rollers, to sound like he'd dropped in from another planet and yet get the stuff that was right to the heart of what you were livin' in today, and that was how he opened up your vision. I carry his records with me when I go on tour today, and I'll always remember what he means to me and what he meant to me when I was young and afraid to love. In 1975, when I went into the studio to record 'Born To Run', I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spector's production, but most of all I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison.
All of this attention would have embarrassed Roy Orbison. He had no pretensions about his role in music history. In fact, he was once asked how he would like to be remembered. ”I would just like to be remembered. If maybe I made a contribution to the music scene, some form of contribution that maybe brought a little happiness to someone, or held a few things together for someone, then that would be great.”
Although he shared the same rockabilly roots as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison went on to pioneer an entirely different brand of country/pop-based rock & roll in the early '60s. What he lacked in charisma and photogenic looks, Orbison made up for in spades with his quavering operatic voice and melodramatic narratives of unrequited love and yearning. In the process, he established rock & roll archetypes of the underdog and the hopelessly romantic loser. These were not only amplified by peers such as Del Shannon and Gene Pitney, but also influenced future generations of roots rockers such as Bruce Springsteen and Chris Isaak, as well as modern country stars the Mavericks. Orbison made his first widely distributed recordings for Sun Records in 1956. Roy was a capable rockabilly singer, and had a small national hit with his first Sun single, "Ooby Dooby." But even then, he was far more comfortable as a ballad singer than as a hepped-up rockabilly jive cat. Other Sun singles met with no success, and by the late '50s he was concentrating primarily on building a career as a songwriter, his biggest early success being "Claudette" (recorded by the Everly Brothers). After a brief, unsuccessful stint with RCA, Orbison finally found his voice with Monument Records, scoring a number-two hit in 1960 with "Only the Lonely." This established the Roy Orbison persona for good: a brooding rockaballad of failed love with a sweet, haunting melody, enhanced by his Caruso-like vocal trills at the song's emotional climax. These and his subsequent Monument hits also boasted innovative, quasi-symphonic production, with Roy's voice and guitar backed by surging strings, ominous drum rolls, and heavenly choirs of backup vocalists. Between 1960 and 1965, Orbison would have 15 Top 40 hits for Monument, including such nail-biting mini-dramas as "Running Scared," "Crying," "In Dreams," and "It's Over." Not just a singer of tear-jerking ballads, he was also capable of effecting a tough, bluesy swagger on "Dream Baby," "Candy Man," and "Mean Woman Blues." In fact, his biggest and best hit was also his hardest-rocking: "Oh, Pretty Woman" soared to number one in late 1964, at the peak of the British Invasion. It seemed at that time that Roy was well-equipped to survive the British onslaught of the mid-'60s. He had even toured with the Beatles in Britain in 1963, and John Lennon has admitted to trying to emulate Orbison when writing the Beatles' first British chart-topper, "Please Please Me." But Orbison's fortunes declined rapidly after he left Monument for MGM in 1965. It would be easy to say that the major label couldn't replicate the unique production values of the classic Monument singles, but that's only part of the story. Roy, after all, was still writing most of his material, and his early MGM records were produced in a style that closely approximated the Monument era. The harder truth to face was that his songs were starting to sound like lesser variations of themselves, and that contemporary trends in rock and soul were making him sound outdated. Orbison, like many early rock greats, could always depend on large overseas audiences to pay the bills. The two decades between the mid-'60s and mid-'80s were undeniably tough ones for him, though, both personally and professionally. A late-'60s stab at acting failed miserably. In 1966, his wife died in a motorcycle accident; a couple of years later, his house burned down, two of his sons perishing in the flames. Periodic comeback attempts with desultory albums in the 1970s came to naught. Orbison's return to the public eye came about through unexpected circumstances. In the mid-'80s, David Lynch's Blue Velvet film prominently featured "In Dreams" on its soundtrack. That led to the singer making an entire album of re-recordings of hits, with T-Bone Burnett acting as producer. The record was no substitute for the originals, but it did help restore him to prominence within the industry. Shortly afterward, he joined George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne in the Traveling Wilburys. Their successful album set the stage for Orbison's best album in over 20 years, Mystery Girl, which emulated the sound of his classic '60s work without sounding hackneyed. By the time it reached the charts in early 1989, however, Orbison was dead, claimed by a heart attack in December 1988.
