Lloyd Hicks de Springfield, dans le Missouri écrivit au début de septembre 19. . que Ronnie Self était mort le 28 août 1981 à l'âge de 43 ans, mort due à son coeur malade... Ronnie Self est né en 1939 à Tin Town, près de Springfield, Missou ri. On dit que dès l'âge de 7 ans il s'essaya à composer un air, mais le résultat d e ses essais ne prit naissance que plus tardivement. Huit années plus tard, alors qu'il était âgé de 15 ans, il alla à le station de radio locale pour passer une addition. On lui répondit que sa façon de chanter était trop "étrange" pour se perm ettre de le laisser s'exprimer sur les ondes .

Il avait 18 ans quand il fut signé par ABC Paramount en mai 1956. Son premier disque "Pretty Bad Blues / Three Hearts Later" (ABC Paramount 9714) était un superbe Rockabilly couplé avec un morceau eu tempo plus lent, mais tout aussi fantastique. Après un autre single "Sweet Love / Alone" (ABC Paramount 9768) il décide de quitter ABC Paramount pour signer avec Columbia Records. Ronnie avait chanté à l'Ozark Jubilee et il envoya un enregistrement à Dub Albritten qui de­ vint son manager et réussit à lui trouver un contrat en tant que compositeur pour la société d'édition musicale Cedarwood Publishing. Jim Dennis, le direc­teur de cette société était très intéressé par Ronnie. Comme il avait le tâche de ressembler un show itinérant publicitaire pour les tabacs Philip Morris, il engagea Ronnie Self. Ce show se déplaçait avec à l'affiche des artistes Country à travers de nombreuses ville du Sud .

L'affiche habituelle comprenait Carl Smith en tête, suivi de Red Sovine, Shirley Caddel et le guitariste Sonny Curtis entre autres. Self, nouveau venu chez Columbia reçut son engagement pour le public le plus jeune de l'auditoire du Philip Morris Show. Le public concerné était étrangement tolérant pour des chanteurs de Rockabilly comme Ronnie Self, Presley, Carl Perkins ou les Collins Kids qui se produisaient régulièrement dans les Jamboree et Country Show, Cette tolérance subsista même quand le Rockabilly commença à dominer les ondes. Seule ment 6 jours après la signature de son contrat chez Columbia, le première session fut organisée, elle allait donner le superbe "Big Fool" où le grand guitariste Grady Martin était présent. "Big Fool" sortit en plus du single Columbia 4.40875 sur le LP du Show Philip Morris (Columbia CL 1048) avec le même prise à laquelle avait été rajouté des applaudissements pour donner un effet "live". Carl Smith, lui-même, y présente Ronnie Self dans une introduction nommée "Mr Frantic". La face B de "Big Fool", "Flame of Love" était une reprise d'un morceau de Dave Burgess, qu'il avait sorti sous le nom de Dave Dupré sur Challenge Records (challenge 1002). A noter que Dave Burgess sera plus tard un des Champs.

Le single suivant comprenait "Ain't l'm a Dog" où la voix de Ronnie est su­ perbe et où l'utilisation de l'écho apporte une touche colorée au jeu de guitare, Ce morceau avait été écrit par Wayne Walker et George Sherry. "Wayne Walker, plus connu pour son single "Bo-bo— Ska Diddle Daddle / Come away from his arms" ( Columbia 4 - 41042) était également chez Cedarwood Publishing. "Ain't l'm a Dog" sortit en plus du single ( Columbia 4 - 40989) sur un LP de compilation Columbia "Know Faces - New Faces Going Places" (Columbia XLP 4237l). Cet LP comprend des morceaux de 16 artistes Columbia de 1957 - 1958 avec une petite biographie de chaque (Ronnie Self, Wayne Walker, Marty Robbins, Johnny Ray, Jimmy Dean, Tony Benett, Mindy Carson, Jill Corey, etc...) La face B de "Ain't l'm a Dog" est la version Ronnie du morceau de Bill Monroe "Rocky Road Blue", elle précéda celle de Gene Vincent mais n'entra jamais dans les charts nationaux. Voici ce que Wayne Russel dit à propos de "Rocky Road Blue" : "Je peux toujours me rappeler, quand je fermais le couvercle de mon petit électrophone et plaçais mes mains dessus, je ressentais le "punch" de "Rocky Road Blues", passer ce disque était une expérience autant physique que musicale". Son single suivant est sans doute le plus grand morceau de Ronnie Self, écrit par les Stars Country Webb Pierce et Mel Tillis "Bop-a-lena" (Columbia 4 - 4IIOI) qui fut enregistré lors de la session du 14 décembre 1957, était un Rock'n'Roll frénétique qui atteignit le n° 63 au Billboard Top 100 en 1958, et il resta 7 semaines dans les charts avant de quitter les ondes. La face B était une ballade co-écrite par Ronnie et Burn Wilson, un batteur du Phillip Morris Show avec qui il joua en compagnie de Sonny Curtis.

En avril 58, son quatrième single pour Columbia "Dait Bate / Big Blond Baby" (Columbia 4 - 4ll66) sortit. "Dait Bate" est un morceau plus proche du pop-rock que du Rockabilly. Il fut pressé avec de l'autre côté la version de Ronnie du hit de Jerry Lee Lewis "Big Blond Baby". Sur ce single commence à apparaître des choeurs comme assez régulièrement dans les sessions de cette époque à Nashville. Ronnie possédait une sacrée paire de cordes vocales et avec une pincée d'écho cela deve­nait la quintessence d'une voix de rocker avec des mauvais relents de Bourbon dans l'haleine. Son dernier single pour Columbia ; "Petrified / You're so Right for me" (Columbia 4 - 4124l) est embué d'alcool et de rage sauvage, ce sont deux grands Rock'n'Roll, Ronnie y est accompagné par les fameux Garland, Hamon, Graver ainsi que par un saxophoniste de session E.C Mc Millian.

Self partit pour Decca Records en 1959, il y rencontra Brenda Lee qui avait également Dub Albritten comme manager, le résultat de son premier single chez Decca fut deux bons Rock'n'Roll » "Big Town / This must be the place" (Decca 30958). Mais son véritable succès fut "Sweet Nothin's" qu'il écrivit pour Brenda Lee. Il était eu Top 10, et le suivent qu'il écrivit pour elle "l'm Sorry" monta eu Top 100 du Billboard. Il enregistra chez Decca encore trois singles s "So High / l've been there" (Decca 31131)» "Instant Man / Something you can't change" (Decca 31351)» "Oh me, Oh my / Past, Présent and Futur" (Decca 3143l) et trois morceaux qui ne sortirent jamais : "Ugly Stick", "Some Other World" et "Go go the Cannibal". En 1964, un single sortit chez KAPP : "Bless my Broken Heart / Houdini" (Kapp K - 546 X) sur lequel Ronnie Self prouve dans un style différent, où sa voix n'est plus vraiment rapeuse, et le tempo plus du tout "wild", qu'il reste un grand artiste.

Puis à la fin des 60's un single sort, produit par Dale Hawkins "The Road Keep Winding" était un morceau de Wayne Carson Thompson, un composi­teur à succès ("the letter" pour les Box Tops) produit par Dale Hawkins qui avait également produit Bruce Channel, The Five Americans... Il ne fut pas une réussite pour Ronnie Self, ainsi un album fut également réalisé, également pro duit par Dale Hawkins mais ce LP ne vit jamais le jour. Il enregistra encore un single pour "Stratch" dont tout n'est que mystère, avant de se consacrer unique­ment à écrire pour les autres. Parmi ses compositions citons "We Willies", "Sweet Impossible You", "Eventually", "Everybody Loves Me but You", "Sweet Nothin's", "l'm Sorry", pour Brende Lee, "Two Six Pack to Go", pour Hank. Thompson, "Mama of my Song" pour Carl Perkins, "Customary Thing" pour Johnny Rivers, "Anybody but Me" et "Circumstances" pour Billy Walker, "Mother wouldn't to that" pour Bust Ives, et "Sure Was Happy" pour Willies Samples. Sammy Self a récemment estimé que son frère avait écrit quelques 3 000 chansons.

Dans les 70's, Ronnie Self entra dans le publication musicale avec Si Siman, le propriétaire de Earl Burton Music Co à Springfield. Leur compagnie s'appelait Tablerock Music. Sammy Self, tuteur légal de son frère, était son manager personnel et le président de la Self Incorporated (les soeurs de Ronnie, Dena et Vickie chantent encore aujourd'hui sur les scènes de la région de Springfield, managés par Sammy Self), il espère que l'on pourra encore ressortir quelques morceaux de Ronnie. Il semble que Ronnie Self avait l'intention de reprendre sa carrière de chanteur entre autres pour venir en Europe, mais des problèmes personnels firent qu'il ne remonta plus sur les planches. Il reste encore 3 faces Decca jamais sor ties, "Ugly Stick", "Some Other World", "Go Go the Cannibal" ; un album jamais réalisé chez Amy et Greg Geller de CBS confirme 3 faces Columbia jamais pressées, aussi un album de "Mr Frantic" sortira peut-être un jour prochain.

Pour tous les cinglés de Ronnie Self et de sa voix râpeuse comme du "Old Tennis Shoes", il existe un LP indispensable sur Colde Records (Colde 2014) un disque fantastique regroupant la plupart des Rock'n'Roll de Ronnie. Si vous trouvez un soir, au fond d'un Honky Tonk une souris qui serait un savoureux mélange de Gene Tierney et de Ida Lupino, mettez sur votre platine " You're So Right For Me" de Ronnie Self. Si la fille part en courant ou saute par la fenêtre, c'est qu'elle n'était pas faite pour vous, mais si elle reste, repassez-le plusieurs fois...

L'autre jour je disais à Be bop que les 3 premiers Albums de Little Richard (Les Spécialty) étaient obligés de figurés dans la discothèque de tout bon rocker (même si on ne doit pas s'arrêter là, mais c'est un minimum) Idem pour le Colde de Ronnie Self, c'est ce que j'appelle un pilier dans une collection de disques, Quand à "Pretty Bad Blues" pour moi c'est le sommum d'une chanson Rockabilly.

Why Ronnie Self never made it as a performer is one of the great mysteries and injustices of pop music history. He had the look and the sound — a mix of country, rockabilly, and R&B that sometimes made him sound like a white Little Richard, but mostly like the young Elvis or Carl Perkins — and he wasn't lacking for good songs, which he mostly wrote himself. He should have been there, thought of in the same breath as Perkins or Jerry Lee Lewis; instead, he's a footnote in rock & roll history outside of Europe, where he's treated as a legend.
Self was born in Tin Town, MO, on July 5, 1938, the first of five children of Raymond Self, a farmer-turned-railroad worker, and the former Hazel Sprague. Self had a reputation as a wild boy, with incidents of vandalism and assault in his background. He became interested in music while still a boy, and began writing songs while in his teens. He was always submitting demos, and in 1956, Self got hooked up with Dub Albritton, who managed Red Foley, among other artists, and owned a publishing house, and Self was signed to a songwriting contract. His first recording sessions were held in Nashville on behalf of ABC Records, which led to a contract and the release of a single, "Pretty Bad Blues"/"Three Hearts Later," both sides of which were written by Self. Issued in 1956, the record failed to chart — although ABC listed a second single release by Self, "Sweet Love"/"Alone," that disc has never been found, nor have the tapes for those two songs.
In January of 1957, Self was picked by Albritton to perform as part of the Phillip Morris Caravan. Most of the acts on the package show were country players, and Self was the resident rockabilly representative — he quickly began attracting attention with his wild and highly animated stage act, not to mention the nature of his songs, which combined the intensity of R&B with high-energy rockabilly. His success on the tour helped get him a contract with Columbia Records in February of 1957.
Self was back in the studio that month with a session band that included Grady Martin and Hank Garland on guitars with the singer, Floyd Chance, on bass, Buddy Harman on drums, and Floyd Cramer at the ivories. The resulting single, "Big Fool"/"Flame of Love," failed to chart, and a third song, Self's own "Black Night Blues," was unissued until 1990. Four months later, he had another try with four numbers cut in June of that year, which fared no better than their predecessors. Then, in December, he went in for one more session that yielded a piece of rapid-fire, high-powered rock & roll called "Bop a Lena." The raw power of Self's singing, coupled with the frantic beat, has resulted in "Bop a Lena" being labeled as the first punk single in some quarters. That might be a bit extreme, but not too far off the mark — that record moves, and it's just anarchic enough to be recognizable not only to modern rockabilly practitioners like the A-Bones, but lots of punkers as well.

Self's career kept rolling, and in 1958 he even got picked for a screen test for the movie Rally Round the Flag, Boys. Meanwhile, "Bop a Lena," issued in the spring of 1958, began climbing the charts and eventually made it to number 68 — not too high, but at least a beginning, or so it seemed. The single's success was, of course, welcomed, but it could not have come at a worse time. Self had married immediately after the "Bop a Lena" session, and by the time the single started to break around the country, the birth of Self's first child was an imminent prospect. He pulled out of the Phillip Morris tour and never made the screen test because of the birth of his son.
Self's dropping out of the package tour was understandable. Coupled with his established reputation as something of a wild man and being somewhat unreliable, however, it led to his being all but barred from any major engagements, just as "Bop a Lena" was getting airplay and starting to generate sales. No live television variety show (and almost all of them were live then) was willing to book him for fear that he wouldn't turn up, "Bop a Lena" stalled low on the charts and disappeared soon after. By the end of 1958, Self was dropped by Columbia Records.
It was a year of between his final Columbia session in March of 1958 and his next one, for Decca as part of a three-year contract, in the summer of 1959. He never charted a song as a recording artist during his time with Decca, but he did see some success as a songwriter when Brenda Lee covered "I'm Sorry." He had other songs covered by Lee, and also by Jerry Lee, among other artists, and it was his songwriting that gave Self what little solvency he had in those years. By the early '60s, the bottom had fallen out of his reputation, however, as his chronic alcoholism began taking its toll. Pressured by the twin responsibilities of taking care of a family and maintaining a career, he chose the career, but he couldn't keep that going properly either. He left Decca in 1962 without a hit or many prospects and was signed to the Kapp label, where he cut a pair of songs, "Houdini" and "Bless My Broken Heart."
An attempt to get Self onto the Amy-Mala-Bell labels fell apart in the mid-'60s. He continued writing songs and living out a chaotic personal life, which was characterized by increasingly bizarre and self-destructive episodes, some played out in public and many a product of his triple-threat addictions to alcohol, marijuana, and various pills.
Self had some good moments and good times as a performer later in his career — he was especially highly regarded in Europe, practically like visiting royalty. The violent moments began to outnumber the others, however, and he deteriorated physically and mentally later on in life. By the early '80s, his condition had deteriorated more severely so that he couldn't work any longer. On August 28, 1981, he died in Springfield, MO.
Self left behind some 30 songs, and what is amazing is their sheer quality. As a singer and recording artist, he was a triple threat, equally strong as a singer of country ballads, hot white (and white-hot) R&B, and some of the fastest, most bracing rockabilly heard this side of the Sparkletones. It's been said too many times about too many performers, but as a singer, Self could have been another Elvis Presley, and had the potential to be bigger — he lacked Elvis' dark, brooding, charismatic sexuality (although he had a dark side, to be sure), which translated well onscreen, but he could take a song and turn it into the hottest piece of Dixie-fried rock & roll this side of Perkins, and with a frantic Jerry Lee edge to it as well. He may have been a little too country-fried for the rock & roll market after 1956 (a problem that Perkins also ran into), but his songwriting had enough variety to keep his stuff fascinating, and the quality of his music was extraordinary.
