Curtis Gordon was known as "Mr. Personality" and could be heard over WALA-TV every Monday night at 7:00pm in Mobile, Alabama. Back then, he was on the Mercury record label and was known to be quite a flashy dresser, with a western wardrobe to rival most Hollywood cowboys. He did a west cosast tour they said that was so well received that he could do it again anytime.

CURTIS GORDON
By Dave Travis - January 1995
Originating from Moultrie, Georgia, 'Mr. Personality' - Curtis Gordon, as he is known began his career on Radio Station WMGA, Moultrie with Pee Wee Mills and his Twilight Playboys in the late 1940's, before organizing his first Western Swing Band on January 1, 1949, which was to be heard regularly over Radio station WKTG, Thomasville as well as at numerous dances in the Tri-State area. June 8th, 1952 saw Curtis entering a Talent contest in Atlanta, which he won and ended up with an RCA Victor recording contract through Steve Sholes, the well known Victor A 'n' R manager. Between 1952 - 1954, Curtis released a number of excellent 45's on Victor, all of which sold solidly, whilst Curtis, himself, after a 13 week spell on the Dixie Barn Dance in Mobile, opened the biggest Night Club in Mobile, called 'Radio Ranch'. Curtis' rockin' Western Swing B and was there to provide the best music around & folks came from all parts of the South to experience that 'Gordon Sound'.
On November 15, 1954, Curtis left RCA Victor & signed with Mercury Records through A 'n' R director, Dee Kilpatrick, where he was to record more fine Country and Western Swing Music, as well as one wild Rockabilly session from around March 1956, where Curtis really cut loose with four absolute classics, 'Draggin', 'Mobile Alabama', 'Rock Roll Jump and Jive', 'I'm sittin' on top (of the World)'. Revered to this day, these four recordings represent the finest in Rockabilly Music.

Curtis left Mercury in 1958 and dropped by the Cedarwood Music Office one day to visit Jim Denny, one of the undisputed founding fathers of the Nashville Music Business. Denny had started his own label - Dollie Records - to run in conjunction with his highly successful Music Publishing Company and was actively looking for product. In the Ex-RCA and Mercury artist, Jim Denny saw many possibilities and invited Curtis to record a session in the Cedarwood Studios. Five songs were recorded with alternate takes of 'For the Last Time' and 'My Broken Heart Still Knows'. 'From Memphis to New Orleans' has Curtis right back on Rocking form, while the other songs fall into the western Swing & Country category, all right up to the usual high standard of a Curtis Gordon recording.
Since then Curtis has managed to maintain his western Swing Band, bucking all trends & recording for the Duke of Country Label. After more than 45 years in Show Business, this tall and unfailingly friendly man has good reason to be proud of his achievements and Stomper Time Records is proud to have him on the label.
"Play the Music Louder" already was a regular song on live shows from the Ranch Girls, when in may 1995 the Ragtime Wranglers were invited to back up Curtis Gordon. He appeared for the first time in Europe at the celebrated Hemsby festival in the U.K. This show was so successful, that Curtis Gordon and the Ragtime Wranglers did a German tour at the end of that same year.
From left to right: Kaar (steel-guitar); Sietse (drums); Curtis Gordon; Errol (bass) and Joe (guitar) at the Waverly Hotel, Great Yarmouth U.K. About Curtis Gordon:
Unlike other artists in the fifties Curtis Gordon started working directly for a major label: RCA-records in 1952. A year later he recorded "Rompin' and Stompin' ", an outstanding uptempo hillbilly-boogie.
The picture left shows Curtis Gordon with the Circle 'A' Wranglers in 1956.
At the end of 1954 he signed with Mercury, where he recorded some great rock-a-billy songs like: "Draggin' " and "Mobile, Alabama". He played with the best musicians around: guitar-pickers Chet Atkins, Hank Garland, and Eddie Hill and steel-guitar-players Noel Boggs, Al Murray, Bud Isaacs, Jerry Byrd and the young Buddy Emmons. After his last session for Mercury in 1958 Curtis Gordon worked with smaller companies and kept on writing songs. Among others his songs were recorded by Fats Domino and George Jones.
There are two albums by Curtis Gordon available on Bear Family records which contain his RCA and his best Mercury recordings. Also available is an e.p. on Stomper Time on which are 5 songs he made for Dollie records in the end of the fifties.
