"Big Bad John" Singer Jimmy Dean Passes Away At Age 81

Jimmy Dean, a country music legend for his smash hit about a workingman hero, "Big Bad John," and an entrepreneur known for his sausage brand, died on Sunday. He was 81. Dean was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in February. He was to be inducted in October.
His wife, Donna Meade Dean, said her husband died at their Henrico County, Va., home. She told The Associated Press that he had some health problems but was still functioning well, so his death came as a shock. She said he was eating in front of the television. She left the room for a time and came back and he was unresponsive. She said he was pronounced dead at 7:54 p.m.
"He was amazing," she said. "He had a lot of talents."
Born in 1928, Dean was raised in poverty in Plainview, Texas, and dropped out of high school after the ninth grade. He went on to a successful entertainment career in the 1950s and '60s that included the nationally televised "The Jimmy Dean Show."
In 1969, Dean went into the sausage business, starting the Jimmy Dean Meat Co. in his hometown. He sold the company to Sara Lee Corp. in 1984.
Dean lived in semiretirement with his wife, who is a songwriter and recording artist, on their 200-acre estate just outside Richmond, where he enjoyed investing, boating and watching the sun set over the James River.

Country Music Hall of Famer Jimmy Dean, whose "Big Bad John" was a genre-crossing smash, died Sunday night in Virginia. He was 81.
A bold personality who founded the highly successful sausage company that bears his name, Dean helped spread country music's popularity through his recordings and through his status as a national television personality. "I was one of the lucky people who really got to know him," said fellow Hall of Famer Bill Anderson. "Beneath that bravado, there was a wonderful human being. I've never had a better friend."
Born in Olton, Texas, in 1928, Mr. Dean served in the United States Air Force before breaking into show business. He helped Patsy Cline and Roy Clark get their starts in music, and he split time in the 1950s between television projects and recording endeavors. In 1961, he hit with the recitation "Big Bad John."
That million-selling recording wound up atop the Billboard pop charts, and it was a Grammy for Best Country & Western Recording in 1962. It also helped Mr. Dean's star ascend to the point that he sometimes hosted The Tonight Show and also starred in his own television vehicle, ABC's The Jimmy Dean Show.
Mr. Dean had another major hit with the country chart-topping "The First Thing Ev'ry Morning (And the Last Thing Ev'ry Night)," and he recorded a Top 10 country hit in the 1970s with "I.O.U."
In 1969, Mr. Dean founded the Jimmy Dean Sausage Company, which was later acquired by Consolidated Foods. In 2004, he released an autobiography, 30 Years of Sausage, 50 Years of Ham.
Mr. Dean was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year, and was slated to attend a Medallion Ceremony commemorating his official induction in October. He is survived by his wife, Donna Meade Dean.

Some information on the funeral service for country singer Jimmy Dean, who died on Sunday at 81, from USA Today:
Yes, it's true: Jimmy Dean will be buried in a grand piano tomb. A public visitation and an open funeral service for the country music legend and sausage king will be Sunday in Richmond, Va., followed with a private burial Monday. Dean died Sunday at his home in Varina, Va., and that's where he will be laid to rest in the $350,000, 9–1/2-foot long, granite piano mausoleum overlooking the James River. On the piano, which he and his wife bought years ago, will be inscribed: "Here lies one hell of a man." According to his widow, Donna Meade Dean, his epitaph is inspired by the last line of "Big Bad John," the song that brought him a No. 1 hit in 1961. "He was the most special human being I've ever known," Dean tells The Richmond Times-Dispatch. "He had the best wit of anyone I ever knew. We made each other laugh. He was the man of my dreams. " Nelsen Funeral Home's website says the visitation is scheduled noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The funeral service — "a celebration of Jimmy's life" — will be 11 a.m. Monday at Grove Avenue Baptist Church, followed by a private burial at Dean's home. – USA Today
